Most Venetians are Christian, specifically Roman Catholic, the largest and oldest Christian denomination in the world. Roman Catholicism was founded by Jesus and sustained by the apostle Peter. There was an area of Venice called the Jewish Ghetto, instituted in 1516, in which all Jews were compelled to live in by the Republic of Venice.
Venice was noted for its freedom from religious fanaticism, but the people of Venice remained Christian. Most of Italy was and is Roman Catholic.
